Employee Spotlight: Senior Project Manager, Alex Johnson

15 12 2023

Can you share a bit about your background and role within Foresta?

As a Biotechnology Engineer with specialisation in processes, I’ve had the privilege of working on diverse projects across industries, identifying by-products from manufacturing processes and adding value to them. My experience extends to project management in the construction industry, having overseen projects for retail such as Foodstuffs and The Warehouse Group.

At Foresta, I serve as a Senior Project Manager, leveraging my combined expertise in processes and construction to support the successful delivery of torrefied pellet and pine chemical production plants.

What inspired you to work for Foresta?

Sustainability has always been a driving force in my life, influencing my choices in food, purchases, and daily living. Aligning my passion for sustainability with my professional background, I was drawn to Foresta’s incredible projects that promise a greener future.

What do you like about living and working in Papamoa?

Papamoa’s charm lies in its close-knit community and proximity to stunning beaches and natural landscapes. The short commute, especially when I can cycle, adds to the appeal of living and working in this small, vibrant town.

What challenges do you see in the biomass energy sector in New Zealand, and how is our company addressing them?

While potential supply challenges exist, Foresta’s well-structured supply plan effectively mitigates this risk, ensuring a steady supply of raw materials.

What aspect of your role do you find most fulfilling?

Knowing that each torrefied pellet contributes to reducing our carbon footprint brings immense satisfaction. It’s a privilege to be part of a company making a tangible difference in the fight against climate change.

What advice would you give to someone aspiring to work in the biomass energy industry in New Zealand?

Passion is the key. Don’t let unfamiliarity with an industry deter you from pursuing your passion. Embrace opportunities, learn from experienced professionals, and don’t be afraid to share your ideas, everyone has a unique perspective which can be very valuable.
